Did I mention that I’m writing another book? This one is with my good & incredibly talented friend, @jilldlawrence. It is a DC voting rights cookbook, modeled on the suffrage cookbooks I wrote about in All Stirred Up. We’ve titled the book, With Recipes & Justice for All: A DC Voting Rights Cookbook.

The recipes in the book are from well-known people in many fields, as well as those known only to friends & family. Chefs, writers, entertainers, musicians, teachers, retired military officers & academics. Even a few lawyers & consultants.

There will also be lots of info about how we DC citizens don’t have full voting rights—and should. Plus fun facts & factoids about DC. Readers will come for the recipes & learn about DC as they check out the food.

This photo is my version of a recipe that will be in the book from chef extraordinaire @adler81. A summer delight, featuring 2 of my favorite fruits & herbs from @surfpizza8’s man-deck.

Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, a sparkling Lemon Mint Mocktail that will make the hot weather seem bearable.

I've just discovered the amazing power of bitters to elevate a drink and would you believe that they work in mocktails as well as cocktails?

Two of my favorite flavors, lemon and mint, combine in this mocktail (with just a few dashes of bitters) to make a truly extraordinary drink. Sip it on the porch, or if you don't have a porch, make a pitcherful and find an easy chair.

Let the drinking begin!

Loved talking to visitors at @kensingtonbookfestival today. I demo’d a centerpiece salad from a recent guest post on my blog (by @soniamchecchia), talked about #allstirredup & #thehamiltoncookbook & chatted with some wonderfully interesting people.

Also met several people who may help me on my next project, “With Recipes & Justice for All: A DC Voting Rights Cookbook.”

Many thanks to @pickles.and.tea & other festival organizers for inviting me & helping me to figure out logistics. Even with my “Passover brain” fog, between macaroons & chicken soup, I enjoyed the day.

With a mixture of sweet memories and sadness, I made my mom's recipe for low-fat Passover Walnut Cake. She won't be at my Seder and I'll be thinking of her.

The cake (and muffins made with the extra batter) reminds me of her - it's light and has a hint of chocolate. Perfect with fruit or a cup of tea or coffee, it is old school in the best sense of the phrase.

I'll be all about Passover soon. But right now, I'm still into floury treats like thse Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins.

The recipe is on the blog.

They're moist, not-too-sweet, and perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack. Warm them up (microwave or oven!) or eat them room temperature. Either way, they're scrumptious. (Yes, @kathygunst, I know scrumptious is kind of a lazy way to describe them. But hey, it's Saturday afternoon, and I've got a million things going, so please cut me a break.)

Best recommendation comes from @surfpizza8 who ate most of this batch before I could snag another pic. BTW - they're easy to make and last for several days if you can hide them from the muffin monsters in your house.
